Grow equipment electricity costs in Switzerland: how to calculate them

Estimate grow equipment electricity use with clear formulas, a fictional worked example and a worksheet for Swiss tariffs and total costs.

To estimate electricity costs, you need actual input power, an assumed usage period and your variable electricity rate. At constant power: watts ÷ 1000 × hours = kilowatt-hours; kilowatt-hours × CHF/kWh = electricity cost. Calculate each device separately and add the results. This is a budgeting method for lawful uses, not cultivation instructions or authorization.

Separate watts, kilowatt-hours and francs

Watts (W) describe power in a particular operating state. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy used over time. A light drawing a constant 100 W uses 0.1 kWh in one hour. A marketing wattage claim is not a reliable substitute for actual input power.

Start by defining the period, such as a chosen comparison month. Use the same period and assumptions for every offer. When power varies, a measurement over a representative period is more informative than multiplying a single instantaneous reading.

Gather the inputs before calculating

List every device. Record documented input power for the complete unit, including its driver or power supply where these are covered by the figure. Do not add losses a second time when they are already included. Mark missing evidence rather than inventing a number.

Separate operating states, such as on, dimmed and standby. Each state needs an appropriate power figure and duration. A 50% dimmer setting does not automatically prove half the input power. Hours are disclosed calculation assumptions, not recommendations for a plant cycle.

Use the applicable Swiss electricity rate

Use the tariff year, product and rate from your own documents. ElCom provides comparisons by municipality and supplier, but these do not replace your contract. A cantonal average or the energy component alone does not reliably represent your whole bill.

For a simple device estimate, use the applicable consumption-based components per kWh. Keep the VAT basis consistent and avoid counting charges twice. List fixed standing or metering charges separately: allocating them to a device is a budgeting assumption, not additional energy use.

For time-based rates, split consumption by tariff period. Dynamic prices or demand-based charges may need a more detailed assessment; one flat kWh rate does not capture them fully. The example’s CHF 0.30/kWh is an arbitrary assumption, not an average Swiss rate or an offer.

A fictional worked example with three devices

The following figures use the same freely chosen comparison period. Devices, power and hours are calculation examples only. The table does not describe our shop’s products or a recommended operating schedule.

Light: 100 ÷ 1000 × 80 = 8 kWh. Fan: 20 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 2 kWh. Pump: 10 ÷ 1000 × 20 = 0.2 kWh. Total: 10.2 kWh, giving CHF 3.06 in variable electricity costs at the assumed CHF 0.30/kWh. Fixed charges and other running costs may need adding separately.

Worked example: assumed rate CHF 0.30/kWh

Keep estimates separate from measurements

A suitable energy meter can record kWh over a period. Check its range, accuracy and suitability for the load and environment in the instructions. Limits matter particularly at low or changing power. An instantaneous watt reading is not a measured monthly energy total.

Record the measurement duration, operating states and exclusions. Extrapolate to other periods only where the assumptions remain appropriate. Refer installation and circuit-capacity questions to a qualified professional when unsure; this cost method is not electrical installation guidance.

Compare two offers by total cost

Lower electricity use alone proves neither equivalent performance nor a better purchase. First check that function, usability, safety and service are genuinely comparable. Our fictional pair assumes equal usability solely for the calculation; no real products are being rated.

At an assumed 80 hours and CHF 0.30/kWh, A costs CHF 102.40 in the first period and B CHF 131.20, including purchase. B theoretically saves CHF 1.20 in electricity per identical period but costs CHF 30 more upfront. That premium alone would be recovered after 25 such periods if use, rate and other costs remained unchanged. This is not a lifespan or savings guarantee.

Add delivery, consumables, replacement parts and maintenance over the same horizon. Allocate fixed fees transparently and flag missing data. Any attractive Club purchase price would be only one part of that comparison.

A worksheet for your own estimate

Copy the worksheet into your notes and add every component and relevant operating state. Also record the period, tariff year, variable components, VAT basis, fixed fees and evidence for each value. Leave unsupported fields open.

Compare devices on the same basis. Our grow shop is still in preparation, with no orderable products or confirmed equipment prices. Keep your worksheet for future offers and register free at CannabisClub.ch. Exclusive equipment offers are planned, with no guaranteed advantage on every product.

What the calculation does not establish

The method is not limited to CBD. Licensed medical producers can also account for energy costs, but their quality, safety and authorization requirements need separate assessment. Neither a low estimate nor a Club account establishes lawful use or the suitability of a production system.

Common questions about the estimate

Is the wattage on the box enough? Only if it clearly describes actual input power in the operating state considered. A maximum can indicate an upper bound, but it does not replace representative energy measurement.

What if power changes? Account for operating states separately or measure kWh over a suitable period. Document the assumptions used when extrapolating.

Why might the bill differ? Actual usage hours, other devices, tariff components, fixed charges or measurement uncertainty can all matter. Compare matching periods and system boundaries before treating the difference as a fault.
